The 5 basic elements of landscape design

Landscapes are more than just scenery; they’re also an opportunity to showcase the natural beauty of our world and your unique style. There’s no one-size fits all when it comes landscape design though, as each element can be used in various ways depending on what effect you’re going for with that particular project or area! There are five basic elements of landscape design: line, form, texture, color, and scale. Each element can be used to create a desired effect in your landscape.

line

Line is used to create boundaries, define shapes, and direct the eye through the landscape. For example, line could be used to create a path that leads to the garden and separates different areas of the yard.  It could also be used to create a border around a garden, hoping to define the space and make it look neat and tidy.  Line can be created with hedges, fences, or walkways.

Line is a basic design element for interior spaces used to define rooms and living spaces.  The same is true for outdoor livings spaces are garden areas.  Landscaping lines can be bold and straight or soft and curved.

Lines in landscaping can be created through many different materials.  You could create line and separation by incorporating a paver pathway, using peaceful water, or even a green hedge.

Deciding where to draw the line, so to speak, can be overwhelming, but the simplest way to think about it is to divide up your outdoor living space.  In what ways would you like to use your space?  What activities would you like to do out there?

If you’re wanting to entertain, a nice patio space with an outdoor kitchen may be a great place to start.  If you also want a meditation space, creating a visual line and adding in a mediation garden would be perfect.  Maybe you’re looking for to incorporate a space for the kids: having a nice lush turf area and maybe play equipment directly in view of your windows may be just the thing.  Adding a visual line and a relaxing space where you can watch the kids while unwinding from the day and enjoying a glass of wine could make for a win-win for the whole family.

form

Form is the three-dimensional shape of an object. In landscape design form refers to the way that the different elements of a landscape are arranged. It is often used to create focal points and add interest to a space. Formal gardens tend to have well-defined shapes whereas cottage gardens tend to have more free-flowing form. Form can be created with trees, shrubs, and other plants.

texture

Texture is the way an object feels or looks like it would feel if you touched it. In landscape design, texture is often used to add contrast and interest. Texture can be created with plants, mulch, stone, and other materials.

Texture is an important aspect when planning out your landscaping.  In winter when most of the color from spring, summer, and fall have disappeared, texture is what really saves the day!  It can keep the garden interesting and curb appeal high.  So how do we create good textural interest?

Good landscaping texture happens by including both bold and soft elements as well as taking into account the different seasons and tactical feel of the elements.  With landscape design we can use more large, bold plants that will make a big statement, while potentially making your home look smaller.  You could also choose to use more soft, delicate foliage and flowers that could make your house look larger.  Of course, the best option is to create a design that utilizing takes into account the texture and feel of the different plants and hardscape elements to maximize visual interest while upping curb appeal.

color

Color is used to add visual interest and contrast in the landscape. Color can be created with flowers, foliage, and other plant material.

scale

Scale is the size of an object in relation to other objects. The important element here is making sure to look at the big picture. A large tree close to your house, may make your house look really small in comparison, where as smaller bushes may make the house look larger. In landscape design, scale is often used to create a sense of harmony and balance. Scale can be created with plants, hardscape features, and other elements.
